Ballet 5:8's spectacular adaptation of The Scarlet Letter
Ballet 5:8's spectacular adaptation of The Scarlet Letter
After enjoying a spectacular premiere in Chicago, Ballet 5:8 bring their magnetic adaptation of The Scarlet Letter to Albuquerque. A fusion of ballet, film and spoken word, this timeless tale of shame, sin and grief in a puritanical is a searing portrait of a morally hypocritical society and the tragedy of those who are found wanting.
With choreography by Ballet 5:8 Artistic Director Julianna Slaner, film elements created choreographer and film producer Preston Miller, spoken word by Chicago based artist Kylla Pate and a score by American modernist Charles Ives.
Judged by her community as a fallen woman, Hester Prynne is visited by her own guilt and that of societies when she is branded with an embroidered letter that she must wear at all times. Ostracised and hounded, her own tragedy is intwined with that of the pious Reverend Dimmesdale. Haunting and resonant, it is a cautionary tale that ultimately teaches the value of acceptance and redemption.
